Lincoln County football game. It was a game about more than touchdowns and tackles, a game about more than punts and passes. For those wearing red and white at Friday's football game between Lincoln and Bourbon County, this game was about the man missing from the sidelines--Lincoln County's Assistant Football Coach, Michael "Mickey" Goodwin. "He meant a lot and not just to kids in the football program but there are other kids that he helped also," said Marvin Robinson, whose son is a senior on Lincoln's football team. On Friday afternoon, just hours before the game was set to start, "Here we are two hours before kick off and we are trying to motivate our team and we get that terrible news," said Lincoln County Head Coach Mike Settles. Police tell us Goodwin was riding his motorcycle down US-27 North in Garrard County when the car in front of him turned onto Jaycees Park Road. At that point, we're told that Goodwin ran into that car and then hit a nearby guardrail. Goodwin later died at UK Hospital, leaving a team and a community in shock.

Methodology for Determining Motorcycle Operator Crash Risk and Alcohol Impairment

Print Methodology for Determining Motorcycle Operator Crash Risk and Alcohol Impairment  Alcohol-involvement continues to be a prominent factor in motorcycle crashes. Automobile-driver drinking and driving has been researched extensively, and the relationship between drivers' blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) and crash risk is well-understood. Unfortunately, our current understanding of the effects my website of BAC on motorcycle operation is insufficient. This project examined a variety of approaches by which the effects of alcohol on motorcycle rider impairment and crash risk can be measured. A two-volume report was prepared. Vol. I: Synthesis Report on Alternative Approaches with Priorities for Research ( Report # DOT HS 810 761 ) Various research methods were reviewed in the literature (see Volume II, Literature Review), and an expert panel was convened for detailed discussion and prioritizing of possible methods. Different methods were grouped by assessed scientific value and estimated cost. Generally, it was determined that methods using existing data would be the lowest cost, but would also have the lowest scientific value. Conversely, the best data will come from new, more detailed data collection methods specifically defining the population-at-risk. Methods examined include "field" studies that collect actual highway data, and "simulator" or "closed course" studies that collect data in a controlled setting. Priorities for future research were assigned to each methodology. The highest priority methodologies were assigned to "Contemporary Case Control," Simulation and Induced Exposure studies. Vol. II: Literature Review Report ( Report # DOT HS 810 762 ) A literature search was performed that focused on: (1) past research on impaired motorcycle operation; (2) past research methodologies used to understand alcohol's effects on human performance, including laboratory simulation, closed-course operation, self-report surveys, crash investigation, and analysis of archival crash data; and (3) methodologies used to measure exposure in populations-at-risk, including roadside surveys. The literature review revealed a dearth of research on impaired motorcycle operation relative to the objectives of this project. The collection of BAC data from on-road non-crash-involved motorcycle riders was the most significant need identified from the review. A total of 143 reports and Web sites were reviewed for this project and described in detail in Appendices A and B of this report. Sixty-one of these are cited in the two volumes of this report. An in-house study of fatal motorcycle crashes was also conducted and discussed in this report.

Impaired Motorcycle Operation - Riders Helping Riders (Final Report)

Impaired Motorcycle Operation - Riders Helping Riders (Final Report)  Additional Resources Volume III: Student Guide (DOT HS 810 908) Riders Helping Riders (RHR) is an instructional program designed to encourage motorcyclists to intervene to prevent drinking and riding by http://cortrightlaw.com/personal-injury/motorcyle-accidents their motorcyclist peers. The program is based on focus group research which found that riders consider themselves to be united by an interest in riding, and willing to help other riders in need, but that a sense of individualism limits the extent to which riders are willing to intervene in drinking and riding. RHR is intended to convince motorcyclists that an impaired rider needs their help, and that they are in the best position to provide help. The program provides a "toolkit" of techniques for separating drinking from riding, discouraging riders from becoming impaired, recognizing impairment, and discouraging impaired riders from riding. An optional role-playing module is included. At the end of class, students are asked to sign a pledge to do their best to help an impaired rider live to ride another day. RHR was developed with the assistance of instructors from the South Carolina Rider Education Program and pilot tested by instructors of Georgia's Department of Driver Services, Motorcycle Safety Program.

They did not believe anyone was hurt.Polanski says sheand her husband have told police all they saw. She also saysthey don't know who the hit and run biker is. Attorney W. John Knox of Knox Legal Advisors says someone does. Herepresents Marvin Allen a man in his 30's hit by the mystery motorcyclist and transported to the hospital the night of the crash. Allen suffered back injuries and four weeks after the accident, is still not able to return to work. "You have countless witnesses, judging from that video of the accident," said Knox, "I'm guessing hundreds of people saw the impact yet we don't have any leads strong enough to formulate who the perpetrator is here." Knox says it's very unusual to have such a clear recording of an accident, but even with that video, investigators have not been able to identify the motorcycle operator. The glow of the tail lights obscures the license plate numbers. Knox is pursuing a civil case and the first step is to find the person at fault. If that's not possible, he says there are other legal avenues to pursue in what is considered a hit and run case. He hopes someone comes forward to help Marvin Allen, a man Knox says just wants to get back to work and support his family. Search Yellow Pages:

Methodology for Determining Motorcycle Operator Crash Risk and Alcohol Impairment

Print Methodology for Determining Motorcycle Operator Crash Risk and Alcohol Impairment  Alcohol-involvement continues to be a prominent factor in motorcycle crashes. Automobile-driver drinking and driving has been researched extensively, and the relationship between drivers' blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) and crash risk is well-understood. Unfortunately, our current understanding of the effects of BAC on motorcycle operation is insufficient.

(File photo/iStock) Across the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the number of motorcyclists killed in motor vehicle accidents doubled from 1999 to 2008. In total, over 34,000 motorcyclists died in crashes in the U.S. during the period from 2001 to 2008. To stress the importance of motorcyclists taking particular precautions when on the road, it is critical to note that the number of people killed in other motor vehicle accidents actually declined during the same period of time. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has noted that motorcyclists are most at risk of being killed in a crash. According to the NHTSA data, the likelihood of a motorcyclist being killed in a collision is 28 times higher than individuals in other types of motor vehicles.

According to Nadrich, Motorcycles have many advantages over traditional patrol cars, like the ability to split lanes in an emergency situation. The problem here lies largely with vehicles that fail to share the roads. Motorcycle accidents are increasing not just for cops, but across the board, and quite often, the liability lies with automobile drivers who engage in reckless or careless maneuvers. Nadrich believes that greater traffic enforcement is the ideal solution for quelling the problem of increased motorcycle injuries. I'm glad that the Bakersfield police force is acknowledging this very serious problem, but I hope that they will take the next logical step and increase traffic safety enforcement. This is especially important in the summer months, when motorcycle accidents increase across the nation. Chief Williamson was quoted by ABC as taking full responsibility for the decision to eliminate the motorcycle unit. "It was my decision to make and that's the decision that I made," he said. He also pointed to Bakersfield statistics that indicate a swift rise in motorcycle patrol injuries during the years 2007 and 2008.
