And the lower leg prosthetics that do have motors are either controlled by a remote, or require the patient to perform exaggerated movements (like kicking their leg very far back) before changing activities, Hargrove said. [ Video: Robotic Leg Prosthesis Controlled with Thoughts ] How it works When a person thinks about moving their lower limb, a signal from the brain is sent down the spinal cord and through nerves to muscles in the leg, Hargrove said. But when an amputation occurs, nerve signals that would have gone to the knee or ankle, for instance, aren't able to deliver their message to muscle. To overcome this problem, the researchers first performed a surgery on Vawter to redirect his nerve signals, so that signals that would have gone to the lower leg instead go to the healthy hamstring muscle, in the top part of his leg. Then, electrodes were placed on his leg to detect electrical signals from the muscle contractions. A computer program decodes the signals to interpret the patient's movement. Mechanical sensors on the robotic leg (including an accelerometer and a gyroscope) also collect data to help with control.

It was weird for him not to communicate. Cain was discovered more than 15 yards from Hickory Fork Road near a wooded area that could not be seen from the road, Geller said. He was flown to Sentara Norfolk General HospitalO for treatment of serious injuries. We had been searching day in and day out, Jurgensen said, adding that a team of about 40 people were looking for Cain. Being gone so long, I instantly thought the worst. State police were called in to investigate the crash and determined that Cain had been traveling west on the road on his 2002 KawasakiO motorcycle. The motorcycle ran off the right side of the road and about 20 feet from the woods the motorcycle overturned onto its side, Geller said. It then slid several more feet into the underbrush before striking several trees, she said.

Glenburn man critical after motorcycle crash on outer Hammond Street

(Google Maps) By Matt Stevens September 17, 2013, 8:15 a.m. Three lanes of the westbound 134 Freeway are closed, snarling traffic through the Burbank and Glendale areas after a fatal motorcycle crash early Tuesday, a spokesman from the California Highway Patrol said. Officers received calls about a downed motorcycle on the 134 Freeway near the transition to the 5 Freeway at 6:37 a.m. Tuesday. CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos said the motorcycle was found down in lanes and the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was described as being in his late 20s or early 30s, but Villalobos could not provide immediately additional details on the crash, which he said is under investigation. Villalobos said it was not clear if other vehicles were involved, but no additional injuries have been reported. The crash forced closure of all but the far left lane and backed up westbound traffic past the 2 Freeway, Villalobos said.

berkcottage In fact, the traffic issue on Cottage and Berkshire is one the city is well aware of, and now working to fix. The DPW did their traffic study out here and determined that what needs to happen is that Cottage needs to be widened because people come up Cottage, go up Berkshire, and people will be able to take a right coming up Cottage to Berkshire, and people will also be able to take a left, said City Councilor Bud Williams. The street widening would also alleviate the traffic it causes on Cottage that neighbors say sometimes backs up to Smith and Wesson. The DPW is still in the planning phase of the project theyd first mentioned in March. Police are not releasing the name of the motorcyclist or the Uhaul driver just yet. Methodology For Determining Motorcycle Operator Crash Risk And Alcohol Impairment

Print Methodology for Determining Motorcycle Operator Crash Risk and Alcohol Impairment  Alcohol-involvement continues to be a prominent factor in motorcycle crashes. Automobile-driver drinking and driving has been researched extensively, and the relationship between drivers' blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) and crash risk is well-understood. Unfortunately, our current understanding of the effects of BAC on motorcycle operation is insufficient. This project examined a variety of approaches by which the effects of alcohol on motorcycle rider impairment and crash risk can be measured. A two-volume report was prepared. Vol. I: Synthesis Report on Alternative Approaches with Priorities for Research ( Report # DOT HS 810 761 ) Various research methods were reviewed in the literature (see Volume II, Literature Review), and an expert panel was convened for detailed discussion and prioritizing of possible methods. Different methods were grouped by assessed scientific value and estimated cost. Generally, it was determined that methods using existing data would be the lowest cost, but would also have the lowest scientific value. Conversely, the best data will come from new, more detailed data collection methods specifically defining the population-at-risk. Methods examined include "field" studies that collect actual highway data, and "simulator" or "closed course" studies that collect data in a controlled setting. Priorities for future research were assigned to each methodology. The highest priority methodologies were assigned to "Contemporary Case Control," Simulation and Induced Exposure studies. Vol. II: Literature Review Report ( Report # DOT HS 810 762 ) A literature search was performed that focused on: (1) past research on impaired motorcycle operation; (2) past research methodologies used to understand alcohol's effects on human performance, including laboratory simulation, closed-course operation, self-report surveys, crash investigation, and analysis of archival crash data; and (3) methodologies used to measure exposure in populations-at-risk, including roadside surveys. The literature review revealed a dearth of research on impaired motorcycle operation relative to the objectives of this project. The collection of BAC data from on-road non-crash-involved motorcycle riders was the most significant need identified from the review. A total of 143 reports and Web sites were reviewed for this project and described in detail in Appendices A and B of this report. Sixty-one of these are cited in the two volumes of this report. An in-house study of fatal motorcycle crashes was also conducted and discussed in this report.

Impaired Motorcycle Operation - Riders Helping Riders (Final Report)  Additional Resources Volume III: Student Guide (DOT HS 810 908) Riders Helping Riders (RHR) is an instructional program designed to encourage motorcyclists to intervene to prevent drinking and riding by their motorcyclist peers. The program is based on focus group research which found that riders consider themselves to be united by an interest in riding, and willing to help other riders in need, but that a sense of individualism limits the extent to which riders are willing to intervene in drinking and riding. RHR is intended to convince motorcyclists that an impaired rider needs their help, and that they are in the best position to provide help. The program provides a "toolkit" of techniques for separating drinking from riding, discouraging riders from becoming impaired, recognizing impairment, and discouraging impaired riders from riding. An optional role-playing module is included. At the end of class, students are asked to sign a pledge to do their best to help an impaired rider live to ride another day. RHR was developed with the assistance of instructors from the South Carolina Rider Education Program and pilot tested by instructors of Georgia's Department of Driver Services, Motorcycle Safety Program.
