Dallas Motorcycle Wreck Lawyer Presents Facts About Motorcycle Crashes
The campaign's theme is: Look twice for motorcycles. Seeing them is saving them. This theme was selected because so many motorcycle crashes are caused by drivers who simply failed to notice the motorcyclist. For example, about half of the fatal motorcycle crashes in Texas occur at intersections. In many cases, a motorist turns left in front of an oncoming motorcyclist and reports never seeing the motorcyclist before turning. A motorcycle offers the rider virtually no protection in a crash. That's why 87 percent of motorcycle crashes injure or kill the rider.

"I always advise people to wear protective gear, even if it is very hot out. I'd rather sweat than bleed." In a May 29 accident, neither the driver nor the passenger of a motorcycle that went out of control due to high speed on Lee Treviño Drive was wearing a helmet, according to the Special Traffic Investigations Unit. "There are many factors that could lead to a motorcycle (injury), more so than a car, but not having a helmet is just an unnecessary risk," Valdez said. "When I heard about the accident that injured two people the other day, it just broke my heart that they didn't have helmets on. Whether you're the driver or passenger, you need to wear a helmet. You only live once, and you have to take the proper safety precautions." Texas has a partial helmet law.

At least one bystander said the car ran over the motorcyclist, who was apparently trying to go around the car as it was pulling to the side of the road. Police said that when they arrived the motorcyclist was pinned under a Volkswagen. A doctor who accompanied ambulance personnel pronounced him dead. Police blocked off Green Street to traffic from Harrison Street to Kelley Square; the victim remained on the ground near the curb in front of the Table Talk pie building for an extended period of time after the accident, which occurred just before 11 p.m. The car remained up on the curb early this morning and the motorcycle rested on its side on the sidewalk about 25 yards south of the car. A motorcycle helmet lay in the road beside the car. Witnesses said the woman driving the car appeared shaken, but uninjured.
