- A motorcycle accident in Rock County Thursday has left a rural Janesville man battling life-threatening injuries, according to the Rock County Sheriff's Department. Related Content View More The incident happened just after 9 p.m. Thursday on County Highway M west of N. Kidder Road in Fulton Township, about 3 miles west of Milton. According to sheriff's officials, Bart Schmidt, 49, failed to negotiate a big curve in the road when he was going westbound on M. Deputies found Schmidt lying on the edge of the highway suffering from severe head and facial injuries. Schmidt was taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville. Deputies said Schmidt was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the accident.

The 57-year-old man and 47-year-old woman later died. Their identities have not been released pending notification of relatives. It is still not clear whether alcohol was involved. Motorcyclist Crashes, Dies Along I-5
The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. on southbound I-5 at E Street when the driver of the motorcycle apparently lost control. No other cars were involved in the accident. Officers responded to the scene and pronounced the driver dead shortly after they arrived. One lane of the southbound E Street exit will be closed until around 8 a.m. while officers investigate. California Highway Patrol does not believe it will have an impact on traffic. Check back for updates on this story.
