Lincoln County football game. It was a game about more than touchdowns and tackles, a game about more than punts and passes. For those wearing red and white at Friday's football game between Lincoln and Bourbon County, this game was about the man missing from the sidelines--Lincoln County's Assistant Football Coach, Michael "Mickey" Goodwin. "He meant a lot and not just to kids in the football program but there are other kids that he helped also," said Marvin Robinson, whose son is a senior on Lincoln's football team. On Friday afternoon, just hours before the game was set to start, "Here we are two hours before kick off and we are trying to motivate our team and we get that terrible news," said Lincoln County Head Coach Mike Settles. Police tell us Goodwin was riding his motorcycle down US-27 North in Garrard County when the car in front of him turned onto Jaycees Park Road. At that point, we're told that Goodwin ran into that car and then hit a nearby guardrail. Goodwin later died at UK Hospital, leaving a team and a community in shock.

John Knox of Knox Legal Advisors says someone does. Herepresents Marvin Allen a man in his 30's hit by the mystery motorcyclist and transported to the hospital the night of the crash. Allen suffered back injuries and four weeks after the accident, is still not able to return to work. "You have countless witnesses, judging from that video of the accident," said Knox, "I'm guessing hundreds of people saw the impact yet we don't have any leads strong enough to formulate who the perpetrator is here." Knox says it's very unusual to have such a clear recording of an accident, but even with that video, investigators have not been able to identify the motorcycle operator. The glow of the tail lights obscures the license plate numbers. Knox is pursuing a civil case and the first step is to find the person at fault. If that's not possible, he says there are other legal avenues to pursue in what is considered a hit and run case. He hopes someone comes forward to help Marvin Allen, a man Knox says just wants to get back to work and support his family. Search Yellow Pages:

Across the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the number of motorcyclists killed in motor vehicle accidents doubled from 1999 to 2008. In total, over 34,000 motorcyclists died in crashes in the U.S. during the period from 2001 to 2008. To stress the importance of motorcyclists taking particular precautions when on the road, it is critical to note that the number of people killed in other motor vehicle accidents actually declined during the same period of time. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has noted that motorcyclists are most at risk of being killed in a crash. According to the NHTSA data, the likelihood of a motorcyclist being killed in a collision is 28 times higher than individuals in other types of motor vehicles.

According to Nadrich, Motorcycles have many advantages over traditional patrol cars, like the ability to split lanes in an emergency situation. The problem here lies largely with vehicles that fail to share the roads. Motorcycle accidents are increasing not just for cops, but across the board, and quite often, the liability lies with automobile drivers who engage in reckless or careless maneuvers. Nadrich believes that greater traffic enforcement is the ideal solution for quelling the problem of increased motorcycle injuries. I'm glad that the Bakersfield police force is acknowledging this very serious problem, but I hope that they will take the next logical step and increase traffic safety enforcement. This is especially important in the summer months, when motorcycle accidents increase across the nation. Chief Williamson was quoted by ABC as taking full responsibility for the decision to eliminate the motorcycle unit. "It was my decision to make and that's the decision that I made," he said. He also pointed to Bakersfield statistics that indicate a swift rise in motorcycle patrol injuries during the years 2007 and 2008.
